Tinubu Fires Digital Economy Aide

President Bola Tinubu has sacked Fegho John Umunubo, the Special Assistant to the President on Digital and Creative Economy in the Office of the Vice President. The announcement was made on Monday in a statement signed by the State House Director of Information and Public Relations, Abiodun Oladunjoye, which confirmed that Umunubo’s disengagement takes immediate effect.

According to the statement, Umunubo no longer represents the Tinubu administration in any capacity. The Presidency also issued a strong warning to stakeholders in the digital and creative economy, both at home and abroad, not to engage with him on behalf of the government, stressing that anyone who does so does it at their own risk.

Although no official reason was given for the dismissal, some reports suggest that it may be connected to alleged financial misconduct linked to the ₦5 billion Creative Fund initiative. However, the Presidency has not confirmed this claim.

Reacting to the news of his sack, Umunubo appeared upbeat, describing the development as a form of liberation. In a brief statement, he said, “Now I am free to fly,” hinting at a possible shift towards new personal or professional opportunities.

The disengagement has drawn attention across Nigeria’s tech and entertainment sectors, given the growing importance of the digital and creative economy in job creation and innovation. Stakeholders are now waiting to see who will be appointed to fill the strategic role.
