Sanwo-Olu Assures Continuation of Independence Bridge Repairs, Apologizes for Gridlock

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured that repair works on the Independence Bridge will proceed as planned, despite the hours-long traffic gridlock caused by the ongoing rehabilitation.

During an inspection of the bridge on Thursday, Sanwo-Olu apologized to residents for the disruption, acknowledging the severe traffic issues faced over the past 24 hours. His remarks followed a public outcry and an order from David Umahi, the Minister of Works, for the immediate reopening of the bridge.

The governor emphasized that the repair works are essential for the city’s future, explaining that the bridge, one of the oldest in the country, had begun to deteriorate. Sanwo-Olu stated that although the timing of the repairs had caused inconvenience, the long-term benefits would outweigh the temporary discomfort.

“There is never a perfect time for road repairs,” Sanwo-Olu said. “Any time you do it, there will be discomfort. Let’s bear with it and come out stronger.”

He further acknowledged the responsibility of both the state and national government for the gridlock, stating that the work is necessary to prevent potential future disasters.
