Osinbajo to Nigerians: Participate in Politics, Demand Integrity

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has urged Nigerians, especially young people and Christian leaders, to actively engage in the country’s political and governance processes. He made this call at the second edition of the Daniel Taiwo Odukoya Memorial Lecture held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, Lagos.

In his keynote speech titled “The Evolving Relationship Between the Church and the Government in Nigeria,” Osinbajo emphasized that political transformation in Nigeria requires more than complaints from the sidelines. He said real change can only happen when citizens, particularly the youth, begin to participate meaningfully in shaping national policies, advocating for transparency, and holding leaders accountable.

Addressing the role of faith-based institutions, Osinbajo highlighted how the church has historically contributed to Nigeria’s growth through education, healthcare, and moral leadership. He said churches were instrumental in championing democracy and human rights, especially during military regimes. According to him, this legacy must be preserved, and the church must once again lead by example, calling out wrongdoing both within and outside its walls.

He also offered advice to young Nigerians interested in public office, urging them to take learning seriously. He encouraged them to study governance systems, read biographies of impactful leaders, and understand key sectors such as health, education, and economics, particularly in the African context. “Leadership is not just about ambition, it’s about preparation,” he said.

Speaking on the values the church should promote, Osinbajo warned against equating religious success with material wealth. He stressed that the real influence of the church lies in its ability to model honesty, humility, and service, adding that wealth should serve a purpose and not become the ultimate pursuit.

The memorial lecture was held in honour of the late Pastor Daniel Taiwo Odukoya, founding pastor of the Fountain of Life Church. His daughter, Dr. Tobi Enuha, described her father as a leader who believed deeply in national development. She said the annual lecture, inaugurated in 2024 on his birthday, is designed to extend his impact by promoting civic responsibility and Christian values.

Associate Senior Pastor Toluwani Odukoya and Senior Pastor Jimmy Odukoya also spoke at the event, echoing the call for Christians to be active players in national affairs. They described the late pastor as a man who lived a life of purpose and sacrifice, and encouraged the church to remain a voice of conscience in today’s Nigeria.
