“Opposition Bloc: NCP Joins ADC Platform to Take on Tinubu Administration

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the National Conscience Party (NCP) have announced a political alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring their intention to present a united opposition against President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The agreement was unveiled on Monday during a press conference in Lagos attended by party leaders, former officials, and civil society groups.

Speaking at the event, the NCP Lagos State Chairman, Chief Fatai Ibu-Owo, alongside ADC National Secretary and former Interior Minister Rauf Aregbesola, criticised the Federal Government over what they described as worsening economic hardship, rising poverty levels and escalating insecurity. They noted that despite marginal GDP growth in the last two years, inflation and living costs have outpaced earnings, leaving most Nigerians poorer.

The coalition pointed to the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023 as a turning point that triggered steep increases in petrol prices — rising from ₦238 per litre to over ₦1,200 by April 2025. They argued that the policy pushed transportation, agriculture and manufacturing into deeper distress. Inflation, they added, soared across the country, with food inflation remaining above 40 per cent in several regions.

The alliance further accused the government of failing to address insecurity, citing persistent kidnappings, rural banditry and alleged violations of civil liberties, including the reported abduction of journalist Segun Olatunji in March 2025. They referenced security reports indicating heavy casualties from violent attacks between 2023 and 2024, arguing that insecurity had worsened despite rising security expenditure.

Ibu-Owo said rural poverty now exceeds 75 per cent, warning that the cost-of-living crisis has pushed many households into severe deprivation. He also accused the APC-led government of weakening democratic institutions and suppressing dissent, urging Nigerians to embrace civic participation and public mobilisation.

At a meeting on September 11, the NCP Lagos State Coordinating Council officially endorsed the formation of an electoral bloc with the ADC ahead of the 2027 polls. The coalition expressed confidence that voters, particularly in Lagos, are increasingly open to an alternative political direction.

Ibu-Owo ended with a bold message to the ruling party: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should begin preparing his handover notes. The ADC–NCP alliance will democratically reclaim power in 2027.”

The NCP, founded in 1994 by the late activist Chief Gani Fawehinmi, and the ADC, established in 2005, have both positioned themselves as platforms for reforms and alternative governance.
