Passport Fees Skyrocket: Five-Year Booklet Now ₦100K; Ten-Year Cost Doubles to ₦200K

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a fresh increase in the cost of obtaining Nigerian standard passports, with the new fees set to take effect from September 1, 2025.

According to a statement issued by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACI Akinlabi, the 32-page passport with a five-year validity will now cost ₦100,000, while the 64-page passport with a ten-year validity has been increased to ₦200,000. These new rates represent a 100 percent increase from the current fees of ₦50,000 and ₦100,000, respectively.

The Immigration Service clarified that the increment only applies to applications made within Nigeria. Fees for Nigerians applying for passports in the diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for the 32-page booklet and $230 for the 64-page version.

Explaining the rationale for the hike, the NIS said the adjustment was necessary to maintain the quality and security features of the Nigerian passport while also ensuring sustainable service delivery.

This development marks the second upward review in just over a year. In September 2024, the Federal Government approved an increase that raised the 32-page, five-year passport from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000, and the 64-page, ten-year booklet from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000.

The latest review has sparked concerns among Nigerians, as the new fees place the cost of obtaining an international passport well beyond the reach of many citizens, despite assurances from the Immigration Service that the measure is aimed at improving efficiency and accessibility.
