Lagos APC’s Local Government Primaries Spark Widespread Discontent

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State is currently facing significant internal challenges following its recent local government primaries. Numerous party members and aspirants have expressed dissatisfaction, alleging the imposition of candidates and a lack of transparency in the selection process.

Protests have erupted across various local government areas, including Ikeja, Somolu, Yaba, and Ebute Meta, with aggrieved members demanding a review of the primaries conducted on Saturday. The dissent centers around the adoption of a consensus method for candidate selection, which many claim was executed without proper consultation or fairness.

In response to the growing unrest, the Lagos State APC has inaugurated an Appeal Committee to address the grievances. The committee, led by Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), includes notable members such as Rt. Hon. Jokotola Pelumi and Hon. Lanre Ogunyemi. The committee has set a deadline for the submission of appeals by aggrieved aspirants.

Despite these measures, discontent persists. Stakeholders from areas like Yaba LCDA and Lagos Mainland LGA have alleged that no proper primaries were conducted, and candidates were imposed without due process. Groups such as the Concerned Stakeholders from Bariga and Somolu have called for the cancellation of the primaries and the intervention of national party leaders, including President Bola Tinubu.

The situation underscores the challenges within the Lagos APC as it prepares for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 12.
