Tinubu Gifts Super Falcons $100,000, National Honours, and Houses After Historic WAFCON Victory

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has honoured Nigeria’s Super Falcons with national awards, monetary rewards, and housing allocations following their landmark triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The President hosted the victorious team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, applauding their resilience, skill, and historic achievement—securing Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title after a dramatic 3–2 comeback victory over Morocco in Rabat.

Each player received the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), a cash reward of $100,000 (approximately ₦153 million), and a three-bedroom apartment under the Renewed Hope Housing Programme. The 11-member technical crew supporting the team also received OON honours and $50,000 each as a token of appreciation for their vital contributions to the team’s success.

Speaking during the reception, President Tinubu praised the Falcons’ determination and the inspiration they provided to millions of Nigerians. He confessed he was initially hesitant to watch the final match to avoid anxiety, but ended up watching the entire game. “When it was 2-0, I got very offended and restless,” he said, “but I stayed and witnessed your courage and spirit. You made us all proud.” The President emphasized that their victory went beyond sport; it was a triumph of character, discipline, and the Nigerian spirit.

The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, also commended the players, describing them as role models who had inspired the nation, particularly young girls. “Your passion and confidence were inspirational,” she said. “You showed that it is not over until it is over.” She shared that she had told the President that the team would go on to win the Women’s World Cup, a sentiment seconded by team captain Rasheedat Ajibade.

Ajibade, speaking on behalf of the team, described the win as a symbol of hope for every Nigerian girl. “This 10th title is not just a trophy. It’s for every girl in the villages, towns, and cities who dares to dream,” she said. She expressed gratitude to the government and called for continued investment in women’s football to ensure Nigeria’s dominance on the global stage.

In a further show of appreciation, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, led by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced a ₦10 million cash reward for each player and technical crew member on behalf of the 36 state governors. Additionally, six members of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s national team, also contributed ₦1 million each in solidarity with the Falcons.

Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, praised the Tinubu administration for prioritizing sports and women’s empowerment. He stated that the Falcons’ win demonstrated how sports can unite the nation and uplift spirits during difficult times.

This moment marks one of the highest state-backed recognitions ever received by a Nigerian sports team, particularly in women’s football, setting a new precedent for how female athletes are celebrated and supported in Nigeria.
