At the 2nd Annual Inspector General of Police (IGP) Awards and Commendation Ceremony held in Abuja on Wednesday night, President Bola Tinubu, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, delivered a stern message to officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF). He emphasized the imperative for police personnel to serve with integrity, uphold the rule of law, and avoid any form of misconduct or abuse of power.
“Be reminded that the power you wield is not for intimidation but for protection. It is not for abuse but for service,” Tinubu stated. “You must be guided by the highest standards of accountability and professionalism.”
The President acknowledged the government’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the police force through investments in modern equipment, technological support, continuous training, and welfare programs. He stressed that these efforts aim to foster a police force that is respected and trusted by the populace.
“This administration remains steadfast in its commitment to the transformation of the Nigeria Police Force. We understand that modern policing demands modern tools, continuous training, intelligence-led strategies, and community partnership,” he added.
Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, in his remarks, highlighted the evolving challenges faced by the police, including terrorism, cybercrime, and organized criminal networks. He emphasized the need for the force to embrace innovation, adopt global best practices, and maintain a people-focused approach to policing.
“We cannot win this fight alone. Our greatest resource is the trust of the people we serve. Without legitimacy, there is no effectiveness,” Egbetokun stated. “That is why community partnership remains the cornerstone of our operations.”
The ceremony also recognized outstanding officers for their exemplary service. Among the honorees were CP Ifeanyi Henry Uche, Director of the Nigerian Police Cyber Crime Centre; DCP Ahmed Lateef, Principal Staff Officer to the IGP; and SP Josephine Adeh, Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command.
