Political Realignment in Kano as Jibrin Backs Tinubu, Dumps NNPP

The lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Abdulmumin Jibrin, has announced his return to the All Progressives Congress (APC), declaring full support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Jibrin made the announcement on Sunday during a homecoming event in Kofa, Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano State, where he was received by thousands of his supporters. The declaration marks his official exit from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, led by former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

During the ceremony, over 2,000 Islamic clerics (Ulamas) offered special prayers for President Tinubu, the peace and progress of Kano State, and the overall development of Nigeria. Jibrin, who was a key figure in the NNPP, expressed gratitude to the party for the opportunity to serve but said it was time to move forward.

His defection comes two months after his expulsion from the NNPP over alleged anti-party activities and failure to pay membership dues. The lawmaker, however, described his move to the APC as a return “home” and urged his followers to join him in the ruling party to support the president’s developmental agenda.

Jibrin’s return is seen as a significant political development in Kano, a key battleground state ahead of the 2027 elections. Political observers say his move may further strengthen the APC’s base in the North-West and signal renewed alliances ahead of the next general elections.
