PDP Founding Member Adamu Waziri Defects to ADC

Alhaji Adamu Maina Waziri, a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and long-serving member of its Board of Trustees, has formally resigned from the party and joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Waziri announced his decision on Monday at the Dogo Tebo Ward Centre in Potiskum, Yobe State, noting that his resignation followed PDP constitutional requirements mandating formal withdrawal at the ward level. He explained the move as rooted in the “exigencies of the moment” and “in the national interest,” urging that the PDP “no longer reflects the values of a credible opposition.

Describing his resignation as “difficult but necessary,” Waziri appealed to his followers to support a “new political movement that can strengthen democracy and ensure better governance”.

In a surprise turn, PDP Ward Chairman Malam Muhammad Bomai, who oversaw the formal acceptance of Waziri’s resignation, symbolized by handing back his membership card, also announced his defection to ADC. Bomai cited shared concerns about the PDP’s future and affirmed alignment with Waziri’s vision for a resurgent opposition.

Waziri is the latest high-profile figure to quit the PDP amid growing defections to ADC, joining others like former Senate President David Mark and ex-Minister Hadi Sirika in turning their backs on the party. The ADC, registered since 2005, is rapidly gaining momentum as a focal platform for those seeking an alternative to the PDP or APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
