Nasarawa Assembly Passes Bill for Second Reading to Provide Free Menstrual Products in Public Schools

In a bid to make menstrual hygiene products accessible to girls, the Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed into law a Bill for an Act to Provide for Menstrual Hygiene Products for Girls in Nasarawa State Public Schools by Nasarawa State Government and other Related Matters Therewith.

The Speaker of the House, Dr Danladi Jatau, announced the passage of the bill during plenary on Tuesday in Lafia, while commending the sponsor of the bill, Dr Hajarat Danyaro Ibrahim (APC- Nassarawa Central) for initiating the bill.

Jatau said that the bill was timely to address the plight of girls in public schools in the state.

“A Bill for a Law to Provide for Menstrual Hygiene Products for Girls in Nasarawa State Public Schools by Nasarawa State Government and Other Related Therewith” is read for third time and passed.

He then directed the Clerk of the House to provide a clean copy of the bill for Gov. Abdullahi Sule’s assent.

Earlier, the Majority Leader of the House, Mr Suleiman Azara, moved a motion for the bill to scale third reading and was seconded by Mr Luka Iliya Zhekaba, the Minority Leader of the House.

The House unanimously passed the bill.

In a related development, the House passed for second reading “A bill for a law to make provision for the Establishment of Nasarawa State Education Development Trust Fund and for other Matters Connected Therewith”.

The Speaker of the House committed the bill to the House Committee on Education, Science and Technology to work on the bill and summit its report on May 12.

The Majority Leader of the House, Mr Suleiman Azara, moved a motion for second reading.

The Minority Leader of the House, Mr luka Zhekaba, seconded the motion. The House unanimously passed the bill for second reading.
