Lagos State Government to Complete Green Line Rail Project

The Lagos State Government has announced that the 68-kilometer Green Line rail project will be completed in its entirety rather than in phases. The project, which will run from Marina to the Lekki Free Zone, aims to ease traffic congestion, enhance public transport, and improve overall mobility within the state.

This approach marks a departure from previous rail projects in the state, such as the Blue and Red Lines, which were delivered in stages. The Green Line, however, will be finalized in full before commercial operations, according to the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide.

The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has unveiled the general route alignment for the rail line, though detailed stop-by-stop information has yet to be disclosed. As part of the planning process, the agency is currently conducting an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) alongside a Resettlement Policy Framework, designed to manage the potential effects of the project on local communities and the environment.

The state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC), which will lead the development of the project. Authorities say the collaboration is part of a broader commitment to building a more sustainable and efficient transport system for Lagos’s growing population.

Property owners along the proposed route have been advised to regularize their building approvals and documentation to prevent complications during the construction phase.

Once completed, the Green Line is expected to deliver significant benefits to the state’s transportation network, providing a reliable and eco-friendly alternative to road travel.
