Labour Party Confident Despite Factional Divisions Ahead of Lagos July Polls

The Lagos State Labour Party (LP) chapter has expressed strong optimism about its prospects in the upcoming local government elections scheduled for July 12, 2025. This confidence stems from the party’s recent successes and its commitment to grassroots engagement.

Mr. Olusupo Ajayi, Deputy Chairman of the LP in Lagos State, highlighted the party’s achievements during the 2023 presidential election. The party secured the highest number of votes in Lagos, surpassing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) by a narrow margin. He emphasized that this victory demonstrates the electorate’s trust in the LP’s vision and policies.

The LP has successfully conducted delegate-based primaries across 26 local councils, resulting in the emergence of 26 chairmanship candidates under the Julius Abure-led faction. Ajayi described these primaries as peaceful and transparent, reflecting the party’s dedication to democratic principles.

Despite internal challenges, including the existence of multiple factions within the party, the LP remains focused on its campaign. Ajayi assured that the party would operate within legal frameworks to mobilize voters and strengthen connections with local communities. He stressed the importance of community-focused governance and sustained public engagement to restore public confidence in democratic institutions.

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has acknowledged the presence of three different LP factions vying to participate in the elections. Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, LASIEC Chairperson, noted that each faction invited the commission to observe their respective primaries. However, due to the perceived divisions within the party, LASIEC did not attend these primaries and is currently awaiting guidance from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the appropriate steps to take.

Ajayi called on LASIEC to ensure the integrity of the electoral process, emphasizing the importance of free, fair, and peaceful elections. He expressed hope that the commission would uphold its commitment to democratic values, thereby leaving a legacy of goodwill for future generations.
