The Federal Government has reopened the Independence Bridge in Lagos, allowing vehicular movement after weeks of closure for maintenance work.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, announced the reopening on Friday while addressing journalists in Lagos. He stated that permanent repairs on the bridge would commence in three weeks, following temporary palliative measures to ease traffic congestion in the area.
The bridge, a critical link between Lagos Island and the mainland, had been shut down for structural assessment and rehabilitation. The closure had led to heavy gridlock, prompting calls for a quick intervention from road users and stakeholders.
Umahi assured that while the bridge is now accessible, the upcoming rehabilitation work will be carried out in phases to minimize disruptions to traffic flow.
Further details on the scope of repairs and timelines for completion are expected in subsequent updates.
