Cross River PDP Leaders Endorse Ikem for Continuity, Pledge to Unseat Otu in 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State has declared its determination to reclaim the governorship in 2027, pledging to unseat Governor Bassey Otu of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The resolve was made public after a meeting of party leaders and stakeholders in Calabar, where members also reaffirmed their confidence in Barrister Venatius Ikem to continue as state chairman.

Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman of the Forum of Chapter Chairmen, Odidi Emmanuel, said the PDP was committed to rebuilding its grassroots structures across the 18 local government areas in preparation for the 2027 polls. He noted that all chapter chairmen had unanimously endorsed Ikem and his executive team for continuity, stressing that the party required “transparency, integrity, and unity” rather than internal strife.

Echoing this position, the Forum’s Secretary, Obia Ikika, stated that the PDP had enjoyed a stable working relationship under Ikem’s leadership. He said the decision to retain him was part of a broader strategy to maintain stability and prepare for victory at the next general election. According to him, there were no divisions within the state chapter, and members were working collectively towards reclaiming power.

Ikika further assured party faithful that the PDP remained united and confident about its chances in the 2027 elections. “There is no problem anywhere in the party. The PDP is waxing stronger and will bounce back to reclaim its mandate come 2027,” he said.

The endorsement of Ikem comes amid speculation that external political influences, particularly from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, might shape the upcoming congress. However, Ikem recently dismissed such claims, insisting that only due process and party structures within the state would determine its next leadership.

By consolidating support behind Ikem, the Cross River PDP is signaling a readiness to move past internal rifts and focus on building momentum ahead of the 2027 elections. The party, which once dominated Cross River politics, is now positioning itself to mount a strong challenge against the ruling APC and Governor Otu, who secured victory in the 2023 governorship election.
