China has declared its strong support for Nigeria following threats by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently hinted at possible military action against the West African nation. Speaking during a press briefing in Beijing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning warned against any form of foreign interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs. She emphasized that China remains firmly opposed to the use of religion or human rights as a pretext to meddle in the domestic affairs of sovereign nations.
“As Nigeria’s comprehensive strategic partner, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on the development path suited to its national conditions,” Mao said. She added that Beijing “firmly opposes any country using religion and human rights as an excuse to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, and threatening other countries with sanctions and force.”
Her comments come in response to Donald Trump’s recent remarks threatening possible U.S. military action against Nigeria over alleged persecution of Christians, a claim that the Nigerian government has strongly denied. On October 31, the U.S. State Department redesignated Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC), citing alleged mass killings of Christians. The decision has sparked diplomatic tension between the two nations, with Nigeria rejecting the allegations and describing them as politically motivated.
In reaction to the controversy, Nigeria’s presidency reaffirmed that while the country welcomes cooperation in fighting terrorism, it will not tolerate any infringement on its sovereignty or territorial integrity. Analysts say China’s intervention reflects its broader opposition to what it calls “hegemony and bullying” by Western powers, while also deepening its strategic and economic ties with Nigeria.
Observers note that this development underscores the shifting dynamics of global influence in Africa, as China positions itself as a staunch ally to nations facing Western pressure. With Nigeria already battling a complex security landscape involving insurgency, communal clashes, and economic challenges, Beijing’s show of solidarity could strengthen diplomatic relations between both two countries amid growing geopolitical tensions.
