The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has launched a probe into the killing of Somtochukwu Christelle “Sommie” Maduagwu, a 29-year-old anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel, who was murdered during an armed robbery at her Katampe residence in Abuja on Monday, September 29, 2025. Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, described the attack as a cruel and senseless act, assuring that the Command remains fully committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice. He ordered a discreet and comprehensive investigation, deploying both intelligence and operational assets to track down those responsible.
Maduagwu, born on December 26, 1995, was a lawyer by training and had earned admiration in the media industry for her passion, dedication, and warm screen presence. Colleagues described her as a rising star whose promising career was cut short by the tragedy. ARISE News expressed deep sorrow over her passing, stating that while her voice is now silent, her legacy and spirit will continue to endure.
Tributes have poured in across social media and the media community, with human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and others linking her death to recurring security lapses in the capital city. The incident adds to a worrying trend of media professionals falling victim to violent crimes in Abuja. In June 2024, Liberty Radio staff member Azubuko Nwakama was killed in a robbery attack at Mpape, while in earlier years, journalists from Radio Nigeria and AIT also lost their lives in robbery-related incidents in the city.
Police authorities have urged residents to assist the ongoing investigation with timely and useful information while also raising alarms in suspicious situations to help forestall further attacks. Funeral arrangements for Maduagwu are yet to be announced, as colleagues, friends, and family continue to grieve the loss of a young journalist whose career and life were filled with promise.
