The presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 election, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has said he is open to rejoining the All Progressives Congress (APC), but only under clear terms that protect the interests of his party and his political movement, Kwankwasiyya.
Addressing supporters at his residence in Kano, the former governor insisted that any alliance must respect the NNPP’s growing influence across Nigeria. He pointed out that the party has fielded candidates at all levels of elections, making it a significant political force.
“We have agreed to join the APC but only on a clear agreement that protects and respects the interest of my party, NNPP, and my political movement, Kwankwasiyya. No state where you go that you don’t have NNPP and Kwankwasiyya. We will not allow anyone to use us and later dump us,” Kwankwaso said.
He recalled how he and his allies were part of the APC’s founding team and endured persecution under the previous administration, yet were sidelined when the party took power. According to him, their contributions were ignored because they did not belong to the dominant faction within the ruling party.
Kwankwaso, however, stressed that he is not desperate to abandon the NNPP, which he said has given him and his followers peace of mind. Still, he signalled readiness for negotiations, noting that even the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could be considered for an alliance if it is based on a binding and transparent agreement.
“We are enjoying the NNPP, but if some want a political alliance, it must not disappoint us like in the past. Even if it is the PDP that realises its mistakes, let’s enter an agreement that will be made public,” he added.
