President Bola Tinubu has approved a series of appointments to governing councils and key leadership positions in federal universities nationwide. In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu named Hon. Chisom D. Obih to the Governing Council of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State. Obih’s appointment fills the vacancy created by the death of a council member. The President also appointed Professor Ralph Akinfeleye, a veteran communications scholar and former Head of the Department of Mass Communication at the University of Lagos, to the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. Akinfeleye, who also heads the Centre of Excellence in Multimedia and Cinematography at UNILAG Radio 103.1 FM and Television, replaces Wahab Owokoniran, recently named Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Federal University of Transport, Daura, Katsina State.
In addition, Tinubu announced the appointment of Professor Ibrahim Adamu Yakasai as Vice Chancellor of the newly established Federal University of Health Sciences and Technology, Tsafe, Zamfara State. Yakasai, a retired Nigerian Army Colonel and current Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Bayero University, Kano, brings a wealth of academic and professional experience. He holds an MBBS from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and advanced qualifications, including membership and fellowship of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in the United Kingdom, a Master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Winchester, and fellowships from the International College of Surgeons and the American College of Surgeons. He also chairs the Committee of Provosts of Colleges of Medicine in Nigeria and has served as Director-General of the Hospitals Management Board in Kano State.
Supporting him at the Tsafe institution are Mr. Hamisu Yusuf Yelwa as Registrar, Usman Nakazalle Sanusi as Bursar, and Dr. Shehu Aminu Liman as Librarian. The appointments are part of what the presidency describes as efforts to strengthen governance and leadership in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
