The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled the personal information of candidates vying for the 2025 Anambra State governorship election. This announcement comes after the conclusion of party primaries and the formal submission of nominations by political parties.
A total of sixteen political parties met the submission deadline of 6:00 p.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025, by uploading their nomination documents to INEC’s dedicated online portal. The details were shared in a statement released by Sam Olumekun, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee.
In line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, particularly Section 29(3), the Commission has displayed essential documents, including EC9 forms, academic qualifications, and other submitted records, at its headquarters in Awka and across all 21 local government offices in Anambra State.
“These documents are now available for public scrutiny,” the statement noted, adding that the disclosure aligns with the electoral schedule and aims to enhance transparency in the lead-up to the November polls.
INEC is encouraging citizens, civil society groups, and political stakeholders to carefully examine the information. The Commission also reminded former aspirants that they have the legal right to challenge the nomination of any candidate if there is credible evidence of false information. Such challenges, as stipulated in Section 29(5) of the Electoral Act, must be filed at a Federal High Court.
The final list of approved candidates is scheduled to be released on June 9, 2025, at least 150 days before election day, in line with Section 32(1) of the Electoral Act. This next phase will confirm the official contenders for the governorship seat ahead of the scheduled election on Saturday, November 8, 2025.
As campaigns begin to take shape, political analysts are anticipating a competitive race, with several high-profile aspirants already emerging from the major parties. The early publication of candidate profiles is seen as a move to foster accountability and informed voting.
INEC, meanwhile, has reaffirmed its commitment to a credible, inclusive, and transparent electoral process, as preparations for the Anambra governorship election intensify.
