Court Declares Obasa’s Removal as Speaker of Lagos Assembly Illegal

The Lagos State High Court has ruled that the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly was illegal and unconstitutional. The court made this decision on Wednesday afternoon and confirmed that Obasa remains the only legally recognized Speaker. The ruling also nullified the Assembly’s plenary session where Obasa was removed, meaning any decisions made during that session no longer stand.

This judgment follows a months-long leadership crisis in the Assembly. Obasa had been removed from his position in January 2025, and Hon. Mojisola Meranda briefly took over as Speaker, becoming the first woman to hold the role. Despite pressure from top APC leaders and even President Bola Tinubu, who intervened to resolve the crisis, Obasa took the matter to court and refused to drop the case. Many party members were confused about why the lawsuit continued even after Meranda stepped down following the president’s advice.

Obasa’s lawyer, Chief Afolabi Fashanu (SAN), had earlier said they were simply waiting for the court’s judgment and had no plans to withdraw the case. Interestingly, some APC leaders, like Otunba Henry Ajomale, had expressed confidence that Obasa would soon end the lawsuit, especially after his reinstatement in March. But today’s court ruling has now settled the matter. Obasa is officially back as Speaker.

Still, the House has not resumed plenary sessions since March 3, raising concerns about legislative delays in Lagos.
