Senator Ndume Criticizes President Tinubu’s Appointments for Violation of Federal Character

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South Senatorial District, has publicly criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent political appointments, alleging they breach the constitutional principle of federal character and exhibit ethnic bias. Speaking on Arise News’ PrimeTime show on Monday, April 7, 2025, Ndume expressed concerns over the lack of inclusivity in the administration’s selections.

Ndume emphasized that Section 14(3) of the 1999 Constitution mandates the equitable distribution of political appointments to reflect Nigeria’s diverse ethnic composition. He stated, “Appointments, especially political appointments, should reflect the federal character, and that is not the case here.”

The senator clarified that his observations were not personal attacks but part of his legislative duty to ensure constitutional compliance. He warned that continued disregard for balanced representation could have serious implications for national unity. Ndume also acknowledged potential backlash for his remarks, noting that he was prepared for criticism from supporters of the administration.

In response, Senator Sunday Karimi of Kogi West defended President Tinubu’s appointments and urged Ndume to focus on addressing security challenges in his constituency. Karimi highlighted that over 50% of Nigeria’s earnings have been spent on combating insurgency and suggested that Ndume should collaborate with his constituents to find local solutions to the Boko Haram menace.

The presidency has yet to respond to Senator Ndume’s allegations.
