Pascal Dozie, Banking Pioneer and Former MTN Chairman, Dies at 85

Renowned businessman and founder of the now-defunct Diamond Bank Plc, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, has died at the age of 85.

His death was confirmed in a statement released by his family on Tuesday, April 8, 2025. The statement, signed by his son Uzoma Dozie, described the late patriarch as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith.

“With deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Pascal Gabriel Dozie,” the statement read. “His life was marked by service – to God, his family, and his country. He is survived by his loving wife, Chinyere, his children, grandchildren, and all who were blessed to know him.”

Pascal Dozie was born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State. He was raised in a devout Catholic home; his father, Charles Dozie, was a catechist. His early education began at Our Lady’s School in Emekuku, followed by studies at Holy Ghost Juniorate Seminary and Holy Ghost College, Owerri. He went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and later a Master’s degree in Administrative Science from City University, London. He also studied Operational Research and Industrial Engineering.

Dozie made significant contributions to Nigeria’s financial and telecommunications sectors. In 1990, he founded Diamond Bank, which grew into one of Nigeria’s leading banks before its eventual merger with Access Bank. He later handed over leadership of the bank to his son, Uzoma.

In addition to his banking legacy, Dozie played a pivotal role in the development of the telecommunications industry in Nigeria. As the pioneer chairman of MTN Nigeria, he was instrumental in the company’s early success and the broader telecom revolution across the country.

Widely respected for his humility, integrity, and long-term vision, Dozie was honored with the national award of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) for his services to the country’s economic development.

He is survived by his wife, Chinyere Dozie, and five children. His legacy, both in business and in public service, continues to be celebrated.
