2027 Presidency: PDP Faces Tension Over Zoning, Eyes Jonathan for Support

Fresh cracks have emerged within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as debates over zoning the 2027 presidential ticket deepen, creating unease among key stakeholders.

Party insiders disclosed that the leadership is considering different options to balance regional interests, but the issue of where the next flagbearer should come from has sharply divided members. While some argue that the ticket should return to the North, others insist it is the South’s turn.

Amid the uncertainty, the PDP is said to be exploring ways to draw former President Goodluck Jonathan closer, hoping to leverage his influence ahead of the elections. Party strategists believe that Jonathan, despite leaving office a decade ago, still commands respect across the South-South and enjoys recognition internationally.

Sources further revealed that high-level consultations have begun with Jonathan and his associates. The move is part of a broader plan to strengthen the PDP’s image and position it as a serious contender in 2027.

Meanwhile, internal wrangling over zoning remains unresolved. Some party chieftains warn that mishandling the process could trigger more defections and weaken the PDP’s chances, while others are optimistic that consensus will eventually be reached.

The coming months are expected to be critical as the PDP balances zoning, unity, and strategic alliances in its push to return to power.
